Marketplace Briefing -- Nokia unveils compact phone


A cellular phone specially designed for Asia! Nokia, the Finnish telecom company, has launched a new model that is specially designed for Asia. The Nokia 3810 is a small and compact phone with a large display. The full graphics display of this phone features a dynamic font size that adjusts automatically for best viewing based on the number of digits on the screen.

The special `jumbo font' mode allows easy reading and clarity at an arm's length. It is also the smallest pone on the Nokia stable. The full graphics display can acomodate 52 characters spread over four lines. With a standard vibrating battery, it weighs only 187 grams and offers up to 95 hours of standby or two hours and 45 minutes of talk time.

Cartier Independence offer

Cartier commemorates the 50th anniversary of India's independence with a special engraved white dial bearing the motto of the Republic of India on the famous Louis Cartier Tank Americaine watch.

Limited to only 50 pieces, this special 18K yellow gold Cartier creation will be released in October 1997 at Rs 340,000 and will be available exclusively in India through the Cartier boutique in Mumbai, Cartier showroom in Ravissant, Delhi and recently appointed Cartier authorised dealers: Danabhai in Mumbai, and Johnson & Company in Delhi.

Apex business administration degree

Apex, the premier national institution of professional training in sales, marketing and management has announced its alliance with the open university of British Columbia (OUBC), Canada to launch the international bachelor of business administration degree programme in India.

OUBC which is fully accredited and funded by the Canadian government, offers over 300 courses to approximately 12,000 students every year across the globe. The BBA degree will be awarded by the OUBC to all students who successfully complete their 4-year curriculum in the country.

Apex is the management training venture of the Asian training major Aptech Limited and offers popular diploma programme in sales and marketing in union with Tack Training International.

Israeli firm communication service

An international sourcing firm based in Israel, but connected with other markets, both directly and through its USA partner Thebol has invited Indian exporters to register their E-Mail address and other details in order to provide instant communication regarding request for quotations. The service is free.

The agency's E Mail is : bidonline a doryanet.co.il. Its requests for quotations covers agriculture, air condition, building, chemicals, communications, electricity and electronics, food, leather & plastics, medicines, metals and machinery, rubber, service, textile, transportation, wood and others.

Hindustan Lever relaunches detergent

Hindustan Lever has relaunched its mid-priced detergent powder -- Wheel green and Wheel bar- as part of its promotion strategies. The USP of the new products is `extra lime power', with the price remaining the same.

The packaging of the products has changed and so is the fragrance which has been ameliorated, according to market sources. Wheel, which is identified as a mid-price discount segment product, was last relaunched two years back. It competes mainly with the detergents leader, Nirma in the 2.2 million tonne industry. The 500gm Wheel green powder is priced at Rs 8.30 and the bar is priced at Rs 4.95 for 250 gm. The lower end of the market has seen a better growth in detergents vis-a-vis the upper end.

Gujarati eveninger on the Internet

Gujaratis all over the world can access the first gujarati eveninger `Akila' on the Internet.

The daily's proprietor and editor, Ajitbhai Ganatra said that `Akila on Internet' would provide updated information on events in Gujarat, particularly in Saurashtra.

Vikram Pandya of the `Indiasoft Services', which has worked out the technical aspect of the eveninger's entering the Internet, said people abroad have been consistently watching daily news on the `website' and expressed hope that the launching of an internet edition would receive good response from overseas Gujaratis.
