Samsung sets sights on Rs 2,500cr sales by 2000

Chennai, August 12: Samsung India Electronics Ltd (SIEL) has projected a turnover of Rs 2500 crore by the end of the century. The company has targeted a market share of 20 per cent for the Samsung brand by 2000. Speaking to mediapersons here on the occasion of launching a new range of models, SIEL managing director BM Park said the turnover from domestic operations of Samsung electronics including exports will touch Rs 2500 crore by 2000. Samsung, currently, has a manufacturing facility at Noida, which has a total capacity of 4,00,000 television sets. SIEL plans to set up a plant for refrigerators and washing machines by March 1998, and two more plants for manufacturing audio systems and microwave ovens by the year 1999. The investment envisaged is to the tune of Rs 260 crore. The company is also looking at the viability of setting up a unit for manufacturing electronic auxiliary products like colour TV picture tubes. Till now Samsung has concentrated on consolidating its position in the northern markets and now the focus would be to develop the southern and the western markets, said SIEL deputy managing director RK Caprihan. Keeping this in mind Samsung has decided to launch some of its new high-end products like 21- inch and 29-inch colour television models, a 10-kg capacity washing machine, an imported audio system and a 60- litre refrigerator from Chennai.
