Cardamom prices drift lower

April 12: The average price of cardamom in Kerala during last month was up at Rs 251.09 a kg against Rs 244.92 a kg in the previous month. The all-India price during March averaged at Rs 252.24 a kg compared to Rs 246.73 a kg in February. The averages are much lower compared to the prices during the last season from August 1996 to March 21, 1997, at 394.31 a kg. But thanks to lower prices, the volume of sales has gone up in the current season to 30,85,360 kg against 24,97,474 kg in the last season.

`Sales at the Kerala and Tamil Nadu auction centres have gone up during the August 1997-March 21, 1998 period to 26,75,873 kg from 22,71,346 kg. The average price during this season is distinctly lower at Rs 251.09 per kg against Rs 399 per kg during the last season.

The maximum price for the AGEB variety at Bodinayakanoor for the week ending March 21 was Rs 460 a kg against Rs 540 a kg during the same week last year. The AGEB variety fetched Rs 380 a kg against Rs 510 a kg, and the Coorg Green CGEB variety atMangalore fetched a maximum price of Rs 340 a kg against Rs 500 a kg. The Bold variety at Virudhunagar fetched a maximum price of Rs 390 a kg during the week ending March 14 against Rs 410 last year.
