The BJP leadership yesterday sent a clear signal to its cadres that the party and its core issues would remain unchanged; that party president LK Advani's call for a softer, "New BJP" was only a temporary measure due to the compulsions of coalition governance. The political resolution adopted by the BJP National Executive yesterday stated that the mandate of the general elections vindicated its stand on national issues.

Budget may unveil a fourth income-tax slab for super-rich
The Union finance ministry plans to introduce in the forthcoming budget a fourth slab in personal income tax rates for people in the higher income brackets. Some of those who have declared high unaccounted incomes under the Voluntary Disclosure of Income Scheme (VDIS) will for all practical purpose have walked into the high tax net. The fourth slab of income tax was likely to attract a higher rate which could range between 35% to 40%.

Panel moots Bharat Petroleum, Cochin Refineries strategic pact
A five-member committee headed by former chairman and managing director of Cochin Refineries (CRL) J Jayaraman has suggested a strategic alliance between CRL and Bharat Petroleum Corporation. The committee, which was asked to prepare a suitable restructuring proposal for CRL, submitted its report to the company's board of directors recently.
