IHF denies plan to change coach

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CHENNAI, July 24: The issue of changing the National senior hockey coach Vasudevan Bhaskaran in the wake of India's World Cup debacle took a new turn today with the coaching committee of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) clarifying that it had not recommended replacing the coach.

Olympian, MP Ganesh, chairman of the committee said here today: ``Neither me as chairman nor the committee members have recommended for any change of the national coach.''

IHF secretary general K Jyothikumaran while asserting Bhaskaran would continue as of now, had said on Sunday that the IHF would act as per the advice, if given, by the committee.

Ganesh's clarification comes after Federation sources indicated that Bhaskaran was being shown the exit and one of the two observers for the onging Murugappa tournament here Olympians Balbir Singh, nominated by Gill, and MK Kaushik, inducted by Jyothikumaran would get the nod for the post of coaching the senior team for both Commonwealth Games in September and Bangkok Asian Gamesin December.

When approached for confirmation of the impending change of coach, Ganesh, replied in the negative saying, ``I do not know what is happening but I have not advised change.'' Meanwhile, Bhaskaran got a shot in the arm with Cedric D'Souza, former national coach and executive director for coaching for IHF, opposing any change for the present.

He said: ``It is too short a time to experiment with a new coach. Bhaskaran can be given a team of his choice to bring results from the Commonwealth and Asian Games.'' The 20 probables for C'Wealth Games and another 20 to tour Germany to play in the Four-nation Cup from August 21 to 24 would be announced tomorrow.
