NZ under-14 hockey today

CHANDIGARH, July 24: The second edition of the North Zone Independence Gold Cup hockey tournament starts tomorrow at 3 p.m., at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium. Four outstation teams - two each from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have reported so far at the venue while one team from Jammu and Kashmir is expected tonight. However, the two Haryana teams are yet to report.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh, will field another team. Till yesterday, the Chandigarh Hockey Association, in coordination with the Chandigarh Sports Department, were able to select only one team. However, at the last moment, Chandigarh's `A' team entry has also been confirmed by the organising committee.

To check overage players from participating in the meet, a medical screening committee has been deputed. According to a spokesman of SAI, a clear picture about the overaged players would surface tomorrow before the tournament begins.

SS Sodhi, member of the gold medal winning team in the 1980 Moscow Olympics would be the chief guest at the opening ceremony.

Chandigarh Team `A': Sukhmeet Sodhi, Kuljeet Singh, Udit Narula, Chandan Singh, Kamaldeep, Deep Tanshu, Saurbhjeet Singh, Jasjeet, Padampreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, Ankit Vashist, Pritish Narula, Hari Singh Bist, Mandeep Singh, Abhishek and Manpreet Singh. Gurvinder Kaur will be the team coach.

W'lifting trials
Trials to select the Chandigarh weightlifters will be held at the Coaching Centre, Sector 30 on August 1 at 11 a.m., according to H S Bansal, secretary of the Chandigarh Weightlifting Association. He said the selected lifters would represent Chandigarh in the Nationals to be held in Hyderabad from August 21 to 24.
