No Congress man will appear before Lok Pal, says Amarinder

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
JALANDHAR, Oct 22: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh today yet again rejected the Lok Pal saying no Congressman would appear before it to defend themselves. On the other hand, Punjab Chief Minister P.S. Badal who was here today termed the Congress rejection of the Lok Pal as having been motivated by a ``guilty conscience''. Amarinder Singh while taking to reporters at Bhogpur near here said his stand on the appointment of Justice Harbans Singh Rai as Lok Pal had been consistent and the Punjab Congress does not approve of his appointment.

He said the Lok Pal had been appointed by the Akali Chief Minister Badal. ``We do not subscribe to such an appointment. The Lok Pal's appointment should be credible,'' he said adding that if the high court Chief Justice appointed any one as Lok Pal, the Congress would be most happy. ``We will not defend ourselves against a Lok Pal whose very mode of appointment is questionable,'' he added.

Amarinder was reacting to reported indictment of three former Congress ministers by the Lok Pal and subsequent report sent to the governor. Back in Jalandhar, Badal reacted strongly to the Congress rejection of the Lok Pal.

Badal said the Congress rejections was prompted by a ``guilty conscience''. He said the Congress move to boycott the Lok Pal was proof of a ``guilty consceience''.

Badal said it was not the Chief Minister who appoints the Lok Pal. He said he had discussed the panel of candidates for Lok Pal with the then Congress leader of opposition in assembly, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and got green signal from the high court Chief Justice as well as from the assembly speaker.

SGPC president G.S. Tohra who was accompanying Badal also questioned the congressmen's credentials to defame the Lok Pal. ``They are themselves steeped in various corruption cases. Who are they to question the Lok Pal?'' he asked.
