Complaints of land grabbing, extortion against Romesh Sharma

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, October 22: The arrest of Dawood Ibrahim-associate Romesh Sharma here on Tuesday has emboldened more persons to approach the police with complaints of being victims of his thuggery. The police now believe that many of his imported cars, his real estate and even jewellery were acquired by armtwisting their real owners.

The police have registered two more cases against Sharma and another case against his friend Kunjum Buddhiraj today, taking the number of cases to nine. Joint commissioner (Southern range) Amod Kant told Express Newsline, ``After Sharma's arrest, two more persons have lodged complaints against him, claiming that he has extorted huge amounts of money and has forcibly occupied their property''.

While M.K. Subba, MP, claims that the sprawling Chattarpur farmhouse belongs to him, Laxman Givnani claims that Sharma's C-30 Mayfair Gardens house was forcefully taken away from him.

``One of the new cases has been filed by Sanjay Sabharwal who owns property in the Regal cinema premises and alleges that Sharma had forcefully acquired that property. He has also alleged that Sharma has extorted money from him,'' one investigating officer said.

However, Sharma has provided the police with documents to indicate that the property belonged to him. The complainants, on the other hand, claim that all the documents are forged.

In another development, Sharma's friend Kunjum Buddhiraj has been arrested as she was found to be in possession of two fake passports. Sharma is presently in police custody.

Kant said, ``The nine cases against Sharma include that of kidnapping and illegal confinement, illegal possession of arms, illegal possession of liquor, illegal possession of animal skins, two cases of cheating and two cases of extortion and fraud''.

The police continued to interrogate Romesh Sharma for the second day today. During interrogation, Sharma reportedly disclosed some of his underworld links in Mumbai. He has submitted a few of those names to the investigating team. Sharma has also admitted to having high level political linkages in the capital claiming that many national level leaders visited him. Sources at the police headquarters disclosed that the Sharma case may be transferred to the Crime Branch for further investigation.
